Why Do We Love to Read Mysteries?

Adrenaline pumping, intriguing, and keeps you on the edge of your seat – mysteries have been the most favored genre in literature for more than a hundred years. Authors such as Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle mastered the mystery crime genre, offering puzzles and riddles not only for the characters to solve, but invites the readers to find the answers themselves.

Mysteries take you into the realms of danger without actually affecting your life. You get a first row seat into the minds of villains, detectives, and perpetrators, as well as exploring the secrecy of the characters’ backgrounds – helping you understand why a murderer kills, how a detective solves crimes, or how a criminal mastermind executed a flawless crime.

But the deep underlying reason why people read mysteries is to overcome fear – fear of the unknown and fear of the human capacity to hurt. By understanding how and why perpetrators commit the crimes, fear is then replaced with knowledge, and fear becomes no more.
